Fun fact: If
you know your Japanese (or spend too long on Wikipedia), you’d realize
the entire show, title, plot, and meaning of overall is based on a silly
pun about clothes!
According
to director Imaishi, much of the plot is based on his observation that
the Japanese manner of pronouncing "fascio" (ファッショ fassho) is nearly the
same as the word "fashion" (ファッション fasshon), his observation that the
pronunciation of the Japanese words "school uniform" (制服 seifuku) and
"conquest" (征服 seifuku) are identical, and that the titular kiru may
mean "kill" (キル), "to cut" (切る), or "to wear" (着る). – Wikipedia
To
take Wikipedia’s messy explanation and make it simple – Kill la Kill in
katakana (the phonetic Japanese word system) is said Kiru ra Kiru
orキルラキル . The Kiru (キル) can be translated to “kill” (like it’s said in
English) or also as “to cut” or “to wear” So there are a few ways you
could take this translation but the most popular one online is:
“Cut to Wear” with undertones of badassery with kill.
So wait, the title is about kill but also about cutting something to wear it. Like...making clothes or possibly cosplay? Yes. It's been about the outfits all along.
